Embracing the Journey
The transition from primary to secondary school is a significant milestone for both children and their families. At Prendergast Vale, we understand the importance of making this change as smooth and positive as possible. We are committed to providing a supportive and nurturing environment that welcomes Year 7 students and ensures they feel comfortable and confident in their new surroundings.
Our philosophy focuses on “Transition – All Around”. This means we don’t simply focus on the initial settling-in period. We are here for your child throughout their educational journey at Prendergast Vale School, fostering a sense of belonging and continuity.
We understand that joining a new school in Year 7 can raise concerns about missing out on forming friendships or familiarising themselves with the school environment. We actively address these concerns by offering dedicated support for Year 7 students.
Helping Your Child Get Settled In
Our dedicated Year 7 team provides a range of initiatives to help new students acclimatise to Prendergast Vale School:
- Each Year 7 student is assigned a dedicated form tutor who serves as their primary point of contact. This tutor provides guidance, pastoral care, and academic support throughout the year.
- We pair new students with older students who act as mentors and guides. This buddy system fosters a sense of community and allows Year 7 students to navigate the school with greater confidence.
- We host a series of social events specifically designed for Year 7 students. These events create opportunities for them to meet their peers, build friendships, and feel integrated into the school community.
- Every Year 7 student is signed up for an extracurricular activity, with some activities designed specifically for Year 7 This ensures they have opportunities to explore their interests, develop new skills, and feel more connected to the school.
Summer School
To further enhance the transition process, we offer a Summer School specifically for incoming Year 7 students. This optional program provides an opportunity to:
- Meet Teachers and Peers: Students get acquainted with their Year 7 teachers and future classmates in a relaxed and engaging environment.
- Familiarise with the School: They explore the school facilities, participate in introductory activities, and become accustomed to the daily routines.
- Boost Confidence and Reduce Anxiety: The Summer School helps alleviate any anxieties students may have about starting secondary school, allowing them to enter Year 7 feeling confident and prepared.
